How to apply for your Learner Permit
Categoryย Bย (Car)
Before you can begin driving lessons on public roads, you will need a valid Category B learner permit.
The first step is to pass the Driver Theory Test for the appropriate vehicle category. Once you have passed your theory test, you can apply for your first learner permit online through the NDLS using a Public Services Card and verified MyGovID, or by booking an appointment at an NDLS centre.
You may need to provide supporting documentation, including an eyesight report and, where applicable, a medical report. Requirements can vary depending on your individual circumstances, so we recommend checking the latest NDLS requirements before applying.
Once you receive your learner permit, you can begin your practical driving training and Essential Driver Training (EDT) with an RSA Approved Driving Instructor.
